Jim Furyk has never won at Firestone but after Friday, he’s looking incredibly comfortable at the WGC Bridgestone.
Furyk shot 66 for the second straight day and he’s got both hands on the wheel after 36-holes of this warm-up event for next week’s PGA Championship.
The former U.S. Open champion was four clear of Shane Lowry of Ireland. Lowry was five under for the tournament going to the 18th on Friday but hit a poor tee shot then flew the green with his approach and failed to get up-and-down for par. He, like Furyk, shot 66 and will play with the leader on Saturday in the final pairing.
Next-to-last group on Saturday will be Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. Watson’s 66 and Johnson’s 67 got them to four-under with Lowry.
First-round leader Danny Lee didn’t fare as well in the second round. His 72 dropped him back to three-under par with Graeme McDowell and Henrik Stenson.
Jordan Spieth got himself in the hunt going into the weekend. He shot 68 and is two-under. These are his best rounds at Firestone. In his first appearance last season, he failed to break par on the long, difficult course.
The weekend promises tougher conditions with the greens firming up.
“I’m happy that I was able to make six birdies yesterday (Thursday) and seven today,” Furyk said. “I’m a little surprised at the scores but the golf course is playing tough and the greens will only get firmer over the weekend.”
