Billy Hurley III took a huge career step with his first PGA Tour victory last season at Congressional Country Club.
Hurley tackled tough conditions Friday at Eagle Point and rallied with four final nine birdies to grab a share of the Wells Fargo 36-hole lead.
Hurley found himself one-over on a very windy day that started with a three-hour weather delay in Wilmington. The Naval Academy graduate and retired officer upped his game with birdies at the third, fourth, sixth and eighth holes to shoot 33 for a three-under par 69 that got him to five-under, tied with Web.com grad Seamus Power of Ireland.
One shot off their paces was hot-shot rookie Jon Rahm. Rahm shot 71 to get to four-under along with fellow Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello. Vaughn Taylor, Brian Harman and Grayson Murray got in at four-under.
First round leader Francesco Molinari was five-under through 11 holes when play was halted by darkness.
The second round will re-start early Saturday morning.
