It was a day to go low, very low at the OHL Classic.
Harold Varner III was the best of the best with 62. Graeme McDowell and Jason Bohn were right there with 63s.
McDowell, known as G-Mac on both tours, is your leader at 12-under as he attempts to bounce back from what has been a fairly miserable year by his standards. He’s a shot in front of former Louisville golfer Derek Fathauer, whose 66 at the El Camaleon Golf Club got him in at 11-under by himself.
Varner, a rookie from the Web.com Tour, had 10, count ’em 10 birdies in his round and a single bogey. He got himself to 10-under with South Korean Si Woo Kim, who shot 64.
Bohn’s 63 got him into a group of six players at nine-under including first-round leader Justin Leonard.
It was a perfect day for scoring and a perfect day for McDowell to renew some of his lost confidence from a season that saw him record just one top 10 finish while he dropped in rankings to 85th in the world. But with a trip to Mexico, the change in latitude also brought him a change in attitude.
“I came into these two weeks with a pretty relaxed attitude,” said the former U.S. Open champion. “I’m out there trying to play golf and enjoy myself.”
A lot of players have enjoyed themselves these first two rounds. It took two-under to make the 36-hole cut.
