Something really remarkable happened this past weekend in Orlando at the PNC Father-Son Challenge.
A 13-year-old kid basically stole the show.
No ordinary 13-year-old mind you.
This one will have an interesting road ahead of him, he might, one day, want to consult with Hank Williams Jr.
Say hello to John Daly Jr., son of the famous and infamous John Daly.
Actually, he’s John Patrick Daly II. And when you’re looking at his father’s marital history, you better get out a legal pad and take detailed notes in order to figure it all out.
First thing you need to know is that Daly has had four different wives and maybe, at some point, his latest fiancée, Anna Cladakis of Tarpon Springs, Fl., may become the fifth Mrs. John Daly.
Daly has three children by three different mothers, two girls and one boy and that is the youngster the NBC golf announcers went absolutely ga-ga over this weekend.
Hello golf world, hello Little John Daly, the most famous “Little John” since the tales of Robin Hood and his band of merry men.
The funny part of all of this is that Daly Jr., at the tender age of 13, got more air time and more analysis of his golf swing than most of the guys on the PGA Tour did during the 2016 season.
Little Daly has a good swing, a long swing and he’s not shy about taking a rip at it, borrowing a page from the old man’s “grip it and rip it motto.”
Things were more subdued when they attempted to interview Little John. He was a youngster of very few words and basically said everything he’s learned comes from his dad and that he does understand how important the short game is when it comes to golf.
He was the youngest competitor in Orlando but Little John and Fat John made a good run of it. They shot 17-under par in the 36-hole scramble event. That was good enough to tie for ninth and they beat some big name teams — the Faldos, the Singhs, the Janzens, the Irwins, the defending champion Watkins duo, the Nelsons, the Trevinos and the Nicklaus duo — Jack and Jackie II.
It was almost an afterthought that the team of David Duval and stepson Nick Karavites won with a 21-under par score. They won it at the short par four 14th when they made birdie and their closest pursuers — Fred and Taylor Funk — made bogey from 30 yards short of the green on the 352-yard par four. The Funks eventually tied for second with Cinks and Goosens.
Didn’t matter, the reviews were strong and often for the kid.
Little John is the third of Daly’s offspring. His mother is Sherrie Miller Daly, wife No. 4, who was indicted with her parents on charges of operating a drug ring and illegal gambling operation. They eventually pleaded guilty to federal money laundering charges in a plea deal.
So Little John has a pair of parents with dubious history.
Big John’s alcohol abuse exploits are legendary. He’s been a rehab regular over the years and is now trying to make it on the Champions Tour where he had a less-than-stellar rookie season despite all the hype surrounding his entry on the senior circuit.
Now there’s another Daly to watch over the years to come.
Should be interesting.

Hi Tom,
Little John was fantastic—I thought it great that they paired the dalys with the singhs. could two teams be any different? Little John’s interview with Jimmy Roberts following round number 1 was shall we say tough–he had one word answers to every question–finally Jimmy said something like “a man of few words”. good stuff and Leo Goosen was no slouch either–best event of the silly season by far.
take care

Hopefully Big John will grab the line from The House Of The Rising Son:
“……tell your children, not to do what I have done……”
