England has a new working-man’s hero.
He has an untidy beard that makes him look like a lumberjack, or an Amish farmer.
He is portly, his figure was not chiseled in the gym but rather at the dinner table eating what else?
Beef! And lots of it.
Johnson made the European Tour take notice earlier this season when he won for the first time at the Spanish Open at Valderrama.
“Beef” was born.
At Royal Troon, he is a crowd favorite and when he chipped in for birdie at the difficult 13th hole on Saturday, the crowds took up the chant: “Beeeeeeeeeeeeef!!!!!!”
Where’s the Beef?
That’s easy, he’s in fourth place all by himself after rounds of 69-69-70, just a shot out of third place held by Billy Haas.
What makes “Beef” a likeable guy is his every-man approach to life:
“I’m just really down to earth and at the end of the day, I’m just a normal guy who happens to play golf. I’m no different than anyone else. That’s how I see it. I’ll talk and chat to anyone.”
And what about that nickname?
“I do like it,” he said quickly. “I do like it.”
