Hinako Shibuno is only 20 years old.
She’s never played in an LPGA event. She had never played in a major championship coming into the 2019 Women’s British Open.
But after 54 holes at Woburn Golf Club, she is the owner of the 54-hole lead in her first-ever major.
Shibuno took advantage of three late bogeys by overnight leader Ashleigh Buhai to claim the lead. Shibuno, who has been nothing but solid for three days, shot 67 on Saturday. That got her to 14-under par, two clear of Buhai, who started to feel the pressure.
Buhai, who led the first two days, bogeyed the 12th, 13th and 16th holes to lose the lead. She was 15-under for the tournament through 11 holes on Saturday.
Shibuno has some really big names in striking distance. World’s No. 2 Sung Hyun Park shot 68 and is in at 11-under par while No. 1 Jin Young Ko’s 68 has her just four back going into the final 18.
