Charley Hoffman was done early on Friday and left the Houston Golf Club with the 36-hole lead.
Hoffman is 10-under at the Shell Houston Open but he may have company when play resumes early Saturday morning.
There was a 90-minute lightning delay and that kept some of the afternoon players from finishing their rounds.
Hoffman’s 70 got him to 10-under, a shot in front of Jamie Lovemark. Dustin Johnson was able to finish as darkness was setting in and got to eight-under par along with Chez Reavie.
Roberto Castro and Jamie Donaldson were both on the course with three holes to play and they stood at eight-under with a chance to share the lead come Saturday morning.
Cooler temperatures and windy conditions made scoring more difficult on Friday and it didn’t help Jordan Spieth. Spieth, who opened with 67 and seemed on the way to finding his form, flopped with a 73 and was not happy with his putting. “I’ve got to putt better,” said the frustrated Spieth, who will defend his Masters title next week at Augusta National. “I’m losing a couple of shots back to the field on the putting.”
Spieth wasn’t the only big name player who has struggled. Phil Mickelson is in at four-under par, six off the lead while Brooks Koepka finished one-over and missed the cut. The cut came at one-under par.
