Charley Hoffman basically lapped the field Satuday at the Deutsche Bank championship.
Hoffman shot a dazzling eight-under par that was set in motion with a 30 over his first nine holes.
His 63 got him to 12-under par at the halfway mark, three clear of first-round leader Brendon de Jonge.
“Nice. I played a lot of good solid golf,” said Hoffman, who played the back nine first with five birdies then poured in four more on the front. His only slip coming at the par three eighth, his 17th of the day. But he made up for it with a birdie at the ninth to finish his day.
“It was a nice round, I hit fairways and greens,” said Hoffman, who has won a little more than $3 million this season, his best year to date since turning pro.
Zach Johnson posted the day’s second-best effort, a 65 that put him in the hunt and tied with a group of four players that included Rickie Fowler.
Jason Day kept himself in the running, he was six-under through 13 holes.
