With those very large greens on the Cypress Creek course at the Champions Club in Houston, we thought it would be nice to focus on some lag putting improvement today.
The Women’s U.S. Open will play three of its four rounds on Cypress Creek so lag putting will be important.
During his playing career, Ian Baker-Finch was an excellent putter. We’ve brought him in today and he’s going to show us a great drill that will improve your lag putting.

We worked on this drill today and it’s an eye-opener.
First, you putt a 40-footer the way you normally might. Then you hit a second putt, keeping your head down and not looking up until long after the putter strikes the ball. You lift your head only after the putt has made its way to the hole. The third part of the drill is the toughest. You’re going to hit a third ball with your eyes closed. It was pretty ugly the first time we tried this. Must have had the putter bounce off the green about eight inches behind the ball. Undeterred, we kept at it. This is a drill you must devote some time to.
After about 30 minutes, we got a lot better with the “eyes closed” portion of the drill.
Putting, day-in-and-day-out is the most important part of the game.
Reminds me of an 18-handicapper banging away at his driver on the practice range. His buddy comes up and says to him: “Hey, why don’t you go practice your putting — that’s the only club in your bag you hit three times on every hole!
