After his good showing last week at Harbour Town, most out there expected Ian Poulter to have no problems making the cut this week at the Texas Open then earning the $31,000 he needed to keep his PGA Tour card.
It didn’t go well for Poulter on Thursday as he opened at the TPC San Antonio with a three-over par 75. On Friday, he tried to battle back, shot a one-under par 71 but his two-day total left him on the wrong side of the cutline at the Valero Texas Open.
The cut came at even par, meaning Poulter was able to pack his stuff after his early tee time and head home to Lake Nona outside Orlando.
He wasn’t the only high-profile player to go home early. Patrick Reed, who finished second to Charley Hoffman last year, floundered his way to a 77 Friday and his two-over par total sent him on his way.
Hoffman finished at one-under, a full seven shots back of co-leaders Tony Finau and Bud Cauley. Finau had the day’s best round, a seven-under par 65 that got him his share of the 36-hole lead with Cauley, who shot 66.
Matt Kuchar barely stuck around for the weekend, finishing even par for his two trips around the tricky course.
Jimmy Walker, who revealed this week that he’s been diagnosed with Lyme Disease, kept himself in the hunt with a 69 that got him to five-under, just three back of the leaders.
