Come January 1st, 2017, there will be a new sheriff in town for the PGA Tour.
He’s not actually new. Jay Monahan joined the PGA Tour back in 2008 with the thought that he might one day replace Tim Finchem, the PGA Tour commissioner to took over for Deane Beman back in 1994.
Finchem’s 22 years as boss will end on January 1st. Monhan got the official seal of approval from the tour’s policy board on Monday.
Monahan comes to the tour with golf’s popularity in the United States fading a bit.
Finchem was fortunate that after only three years in office, a kid named Tiger Woods turned professional and brought international attention to the game.
