When a player reaches No. 1 in the world, they are supposed to get themselves in contention then go on to win.
Two weeks ago, Jason Day got himself in contention after 36-holes at The Heritage then promptly threw up on his Adidas golf shoes and shot 79 that Saturday at Hilton Head.
The world’s No. 1 is NOT supposed to shoot eight-over par on moving day.
Day himself termed it a “shocking” round.
No doubt.
His performance was just another indicator of how much inconsistency there is at the top of the rankings with Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.
Day is looking to rebound this week in New Orleans at the Zurich Classic and he needs to. He is one of the few big-name draw in a tournament that isn’t on the schedule of most big-name players.
That should make it that much easier for Day but that certainly wasn’t the case two weeks ago when he finished 23rd at Harbour Town.
Day is one of three players from the top 1o in the Official World Golf Rankings in the field this week. Joining him are No. 5 Rickie Fowler and defending champion Justin Rose, who is clinging to the No. 10 position.
Day comes in after a much needed week of rest after he admitted fatigue playing a factor in his face-flop at Hilton Head.
Fowler should be well rested after his Bahamian vacation with Spieth, Justin Thomas and Smylie Kaufman.
Charley Hoffman’s game is in great shape and he finally overcame his “Sunday Slump” last week to win in San Antonio. He may have something to say about who wins before Sunday is over.
