Jason Day is just killing the rest of the field at the BMW Championship.
Day rolled in a 42-foot eagle putt at the 18th hole Friday that got him to 18-under par, 124, at Conway Farms, tying the PGA Tour record for a low 36-hole score.
“I never expected to come out and shoot eight-under after the 61 yesterday,” Day said after holing the big putt to finish his round. “Just free,” is how he described his overall play.
The free-swinging Aussie is a whopping five shots better than Daniel Berger and Brendon Todd. Both are 13-under. Berger shot 64, Todd 63 to tie Day for Friday’s low round.
Jordan Spieth, playing with Day, hit a spectacular second into the par-five 18th. It stopped just three feet away and he made it for his own eagle. Despite scores of 65-66, Spieth finds himself an incredible seven shots behind the leader. Spieth is 11-under and tied for fourth with Kevin Na.
Rory McIlroy shot 65 but at nine-under finds himself that many shots behind Day.
Conditions were ripe for low scores. The area took on two inches of rain Thursday night and lift-clean-and-place rules were in effect. “You had to change gears and play aggressively today,” said Todd, who equaled Day’s 63 by holing out from the fairway at the 18th for eagle.
With only 69 players in the field after Jim Furyk’s withdrawal on Thursday, there is no 36-hole cut and it will be a weekend race to make it into the top 30 and advance to next week’s Tour Championship at East Lake.
