Put that coffee down! Coffee is for closers only!
— Blake, the brutal sales motivator in Glengarry, Glen Ross
Jason Day literally stole the show at his pre-tournament press conference Wednesday on the eve of the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.
When asked about his current hot streak, Day replied:
“It’s like Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy had a baby — and I was it! I’ve got Rory’s length and I hope I have Jordan’s touch.”
So said the world’s No. 1, Jason Day.
Of course he laughed when he threw that one out but when you think about the things he’s done on the golf course in his past six events, it’s more truth than fiction.
The biggest question going into the next four days at East Lake — can he close the big deal?
There’s a huge amount of money at stake. In addition to the $1.4 million first place money for winning the Tour Championship, Day would also pocket the $10 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup.
Sounds like grounds for motivation.
Day has a lot of reasons to close this one. If he does, he certainly inserts himself into the Player of the Year conversation.
So who would get that vote? Jordan Spieth with his two majors and four wins or Jason Day with one major, six wins, three of them FedEx Cup playoff wins?
That’s a tough one.
But starting Thursday, the resolution and answer may be on the way.
