Jason Day was making a big run up the leader board Friday at the PGA Championship when dangerous weather put an end to his great play.
Day had just birdied three of the first five holes on the back nine and had hit his second shot on the 15th green when the horn sounded that brought the players off the course at Whistling Straits. Day was five-under for the day, nine-under for the tournament, tied with fellow Aussie Matt Jones.
“It’s a good idea to come back in the morning,” Day said as play was called off for the evening. Play will resume at 7 a.m., CDT. “I left myself a good putt on 15 to get to 10 (under),” Day said.
Jones, like Day, was five-under for his round after 12 holes.
Justin Rose had reached eight-under and has just one hole to play when they come back in the morning.
Jordan Spieth brought excitement to the course early in the day. He holed a bunker shot at the 18th, his ninth of the day, for birdie. He then made three more birdies coming in on the front nine for a 67 that got him to six-under and within sniffing distance of the lead.
David Lingmerth tacked a 70 on to his opening 67 to post seven-under and held the clubhouse lead from the morning wave.
First round leader Dustin Johnson, who could do no wrong on Thursday, found the going much tougher during his second round. He was one-under at the turn to get to seven-under then grabbed a brief share of the lead with a birdie at the 10th. But bogeys at three of the easier back-nine holes, 11, 13 and 14, dropped him back to five-under with four holes left in his second round.
Johnson, who dismantled the par fives on Thursday, was one-over for three of the par fives in his second round.
The 36-hole projected cut line had moved from one-over to two-over but Tiger Woods was still in jeopardy of missing the weekend. Woods was one-over for his round through 13 holes and needed to play his final five holes two-under to hang around for the final 36.
