Jason Dufner has made but a single bogey through 36 holes at The Memorial championship.
On Friday, he carved up Muirfield Village for the second straight day, shooting another 65 to post 14-under at the halfway mark.
“Jason has absolutely blitzed the golf course,” said owner and designer Jack Nicklaus.
“What course is he playing?” quipped Jordan Spieth, who like the rest of the field, will be forced to play catch-up over the weekend.
Dufner’s round included a sensational six-iron from 185-yards out at the 18th hole, his ninth of the day. His approach shot landed behind the hole, then started rolling back off the slope until it finally found the bottom of the cup for an eagle two. It was payback for the only bogey he has made the first two days.
“I’m glad it’s out of the way,” deadpanned Dufner, recalling his bogey at 18 on Thursday.
The former PGA champ was five shots clear of second place Daniel Summerhays, who followed his opening 66 with 69 to get to nine-under.
Rickie Fowler had the day’s second-best round. His 66 got him to eight-under, six behind Dufner.
Spieth was next at six-under after getting around in even par. He was joined by Jamie Lovemark and Justin Thomas.
“I hit everything pretty well,” Dufner said after his round. He played early and gave everyone a glance at what they needed to do. “I made some nice pars, rolled in some good putts.”
Not everyone fared well this week, especially some big names.
World’s No. 1 Dustin Johnson went home early after shooting 78-74. Same for Jon Rahm. He shot 73-77 to miss the cut.
The 36-hole cut came at three-over par.
