Things were looking pretty good for Jay Haas with one round to play at the Dominion Energy Classic.
He was 11-under par through 36 holes and had a chance at Champions Tour history. Haas, at age 64, would be the oldest player to win on that circuit — in history.
Typically it’s the 50-55 year-olds who have dominated that tour but Bernhard Langer has promptly debunked that trend.
But at age 64? Haas would have been in rarified air.
Things didn’t quite work out for him in Richmond Sunday. He managed just two birdies on his way to a two-over par 74 and fell into a tie for third, two behind eventual winner Woody “The putter head-banger” Austin.
Austin closed with 69 to win with an 11-under total, the number Haas started the final round with.
And speaking of Langer, he fell just a shot short of another possible win. He closed with 70 and finished solo second at 10-under par.
The over-55 club heads to California this week for the Invesco then the Schwab Cup Championship will wrap up the season the week of Nov. 8 in Phoenix.
