John Daly turns 50 today.
He has totally defied the odds.
Who figured he’d live this long?
“Everyone has addictions and my problem is I have 5,000 of them. If it’s not drinking, it’s gambling, if it’s not gambling, it’s eating anything from burgers to donuts to M&Ms.”
Those are John Daly’s own words. It is quintessential JD.
If you’ve ever read his “tell on myself” autobiography: My Life In And Out Of The Rough, yes, you scratch your head with us and wonder how he made it to 50.
The good news for JD is that he has and once again, will have a place to play. He’s headed for the Champions Tour and will make his debut next week at the Woodlands for the Insperity. Now a total irony is that the presenting sponsor is United Healthcare. When you take into consideration JD’s description written above, is the sort of stuff that makes healthcare folks shudder.
By his own admission, Daly has gambled away an estimated $50-60 million.
The rest he simply squandered.
Seriously, JD has had four wives and two major championships.
His life has been an ongoing train wreck and there lies his vast appeal. His life is a mess but people really want to watch.
He made his life a literal open book with his autobiography and it is compelling reading. Read it and you will automatically feel a lot better about yourself, no matter what your situation might be.
Daly hasn’t had status on any tour since 2007 and it will be interesting to see how his skills measure up against the other “old guys.”
The bottom line is that the Champions Tour is like any other tour — doesn’t matter how far you hit it, you still have to make the putts and therein lies the challenge at every level of golf.
So Happy Birthday, JD.
Never thought you’d make it this far!
