Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm have been total monsters this week at the WGC Match Play.
Naturally, both have made it to the Final Four along with Cinderellas Hideto Tanihara and Bill Haas.
Sunday’s semi-finals will match the No. 1 seed — Johnson — against the 54th seed, Tanihara while Rahm, the 21 seed will take on Haas, the 42 seed. Winners will duke it out in the afternoon final.
Johnson and Rahm have run rampant through the competition.
Johnson has not trailed in a match, after easily dispatching namesake Zach Johnson (5&4) in the morning, the world’s No. 1 rolled up a three-up lead at the turn over Alex Noren in the afternoon but proceeded to lose three straight holes and for the first time, found himself even with five holes to play. But Johnson asserted himself with three birdies and closed out Noren, 3-and-2 after a birdie at the 16th.
“I like my chances,” Johnson said after his win. “I’m playing really well, so we’ll just wait and see.”
Rahm buried Charles Howell III in the morning, 6-and-4 then blased Soren Kjeldsen in the afternoon, 7-and-5. He needed just 27 holes to win the two matches and over those holes he produced nine birdies and an eagle. Rahm even impressed himself with that play. “Extremely,” he said. “I think I missed just one shot all day, it was a perfect day.”
Haas got into the semis with a 1-up win over Kevin Na in the morning then he upset Phil Mickelson in the afternoon, 2-and-1. Mickelson, who putted really well in the morning when he took a 4-and-3 win over Marc Leishman, saw his putter go cold against Haas and that cost him.
Tanihara took a 2-and-1 win over Paul Casey in the morning then reached the semis with an impressive 4-and-2 win over Ross Fisher in the afternoon.
