Jordan Spieth gave it his all Sunday at Whistling Straits but Jason Day was simply too good.
The final round at Whistling Straits ended the 2015 major championship season and it ended a dream run for Spieth.
It also gave him a couple of huge consolation prizes.
First, Spieth’s closing 68 helped him set the all-time aggregate scoring record for a single season in the major championships. Spieth played all four in an amazing 54-under par total. That wiped away the previous record of 53-under set by Tiger Woods in 2000 when he won the U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA that summer.
Spieth won the Masters with a record-tying 18-under par total then won the U.S. Open. He finished a single shot out of the Open Championship playoff then on Sunday, finished solo second to Day.
That finish gave Spieth another huge milestone.
He is now the No. 1 player in the world, passing Rory McIlroy. McIlroy fell to second while Day’s PGA title boosted him to the No. 3 ranking.
McIlroy made his return this week from the ankle injury he suffered just weeks prior to the Open Championship. He played the first two rounds with Spieth. McIlroy recorded rounds of 71-71-68-69 for a 279 total, nine-under par and it was good for a top 20 finish, 17th to be exact. But it wasn’t enough to keep Spieth from taking over the No. 1 spot.
Not a bad summer for Jordan Spieth.
