The great Jordan Spieth Putter Switch lasted exactly four days.
Spieth was back to the comfort of his old 009 model Scotty Cameron Thursday at Colonial as he set out to defend his Dean and Deluca title.
Opening Day for Spieth was a total mixed bag.
There were four bogeys and a double. Good news is that there were six birdies, including back-to-back on 17 and 18 to finish his first round.
But his even par 70 left him five back of the lead trio.
Kelly Kraft, Derek Fathauer and J.T. Poston set the first round pace with five-under par 65s.
Jon Rahm, the rookie sensation who simply does not look like a rookie, got a lot of attention in Fort Worth with his opening 66.
Phil Mickelson put his name in the hunt with the 67 he shot.
Spieth blamed his erratic day on the gusty winds that blew around Colonial. “With gusty winds it’s not going to end up where you think it’s going a lot of the time,” Spieth said. Spieth’s tee shots, for the most part, did not end up well. He hit just five of 14 fairways.
Spieth’s putting kept him in contention. He used his old putter just 26 times.
He played late Thursday and will be out early Friday, perhaps the winds will be more friendly.
