Jordan Spieth didn’t drive it that well on moving day at the Colonial Invitational but it was his lethal short game that looked exactly like it did during his 2015 season.
Spieth stayed bogey-free on Saturday until he missed an eight-foot par putt at the 18th hole, still, he finished his round with a 65 that moved him into the 54-hole lead.
Spieth had the good fortune of finishing his second round on Friday. Many players logged a long day. They had to finish their second round early Saturday then go back out for the third round. “Trying to stay consistent,” Spieth said after his round. “Hopefully a few under par tomorrow is good enough.”
Spieth’s scrambling display took everyone back to last season when he won two majors and came close in the other two. He will go into Sunday’s round paired with Ryan Palmer, who knows Colonial Country Club extremely well.
“Being a member here and knowing the golf course is paying off,” Palmer pointed out. He had a chance to tie Spieth but he missed a short birdie putt from six feet at 18 to shoot 66.
Webb Simpson played with Spieth and had the chance to go with him on Sunday but he missed a short par putt to finish his day with a bogey. He starts Sunday at 11-under with Palmer.
Martin Piller played in the final group and cut Spieth and Simpson by two shots at 18 when he holed a five-footer for birdie to get to 10-under along with Harris English and Kyle Reifers.
Round of the day went to Matt Kuchar. Kuchar, who finished his second round Friday with a triple-bogey seven at the ninth, was red-hot on Saturday. He shot 63 and it could have been a shot better had he not missed a five-footer for birdie at the ninth, his final hole of the day.
