Jordan Spieth is alive and kicking or perhaps doing the Texas Two-Step in Fort Worth.
Spieth waited five and a half hours to play on Friday thanks to a major weather delay at the Colonial Invitational, but when he finally got out, he wasted no time showing that his dormant golf game might be coming out of hibernation.
Spieth, who hit only six fairways on Thursday, found 10 on Friday, hit 14 greens and fashioned a four-under par 66 that put him in the thick of contention heading into the weekend.
Spieth played the back nine first and quietly shot even par but began to heat up over his final nine, the front, where four birdies got him into the clubhouse with a 66 to put him at seven-under par. “I feel very comfortable over the ball,” Spieth said after he finished. “I got a lot of good work in Sunday through Thursday.”
Spieth had company at seven-under as Patrick Reed reached it with 10 holes still left to go in his round when darkness fell.
Leader in the clubhouse from the morning half of the draw was former U.S. Open champion Web Simpson, Simpson birdied two of his final three holes for 67 that got him to eight-under.
Overnight leader Bryce Molder finally got out as Spieth was finishing. He got off to a very hot start with birdies on his first two holes then added three more at the fifth, seventh and eighth to get to 11-under par. Molder lost his momentum after the turn when he hit an errant drive at the 12th, missed the green then took three-putts and made double-bogey to drop back to nine-under par.
Molder’s day ended with three holes left as darkness ended play. He was still at nine-under and will come back to finish the second round early Saturday morning.
