You can always use an extra $3,000,000.
Jordan Spieth can keep that in mind when he looks back on his failure to win the 2017 FedEx Cup championship.
Spieth, the overall points leader coming into East Lake, looked for a moment like he’d make a back nine charge on Sunday.
After a so-so one-under par effort on the front nine, he stood over a 93-yard approach shot at the par four 10th then promptly jarred a lob wedge from 93 yards out. He added another birdie at the 13th to get to eight-under par but his run would end there. He played the last five holes one-over, posted 67 and tied for seventh at seven-under with Tony Finau and Jon Rahm.
“I didn’t have much going. I really had a lot of chances today,” Spieth lamented. “Probably my worst putting week of the year.”
To sooth Spieth’s wounded ego, he collected $3 million from the year-end FedEx Cup pot and it’s a fat pot.
Of course, Justin Thomas walked off with the lion’s share — $10 million. But Spieth’s second place finish sent him home with some serious dough.
Tour Championship winner Xander Schauffele banked $2 million for finishing third overall. Dustin Johnson collected $1.5 million and Jon Rahm picked up a cool million for his fifth-place finish.
