It is not surprising that Jordan Spieth is leading The Travelers after 54 holes.
What is surprising is the man who will go into the final round just a shot behind him.
Spieth birdied three of his final four holes Saturday and holed a 20-footer to finish a shot in front of 43-year-old Boo Weekley.
Spieth’s in a 12-under par at the TPC River Highlands after shooting 66 and will play with Weekley, 20 years his senior in the final pairing on Sunday.
Weekley’s 65 put him in position for a fourth career win. He hasn’t had a victory since the 2013 Colonial.
Spieth and Weekley were the only players to reach double figures under par on moving day. Daniel Berger, who won last week in Memphis, is right in the thick of it again. He shot 66 to get to nine-under. C.T. Pan had the day’s best round — a six-under par 64 that tied him at eight-under par with David Lingmerth (65) and Paul Casey (66).
Spieth had an up-and-down back nine after turning in two-under. He birdied 10 and 11 to open up a two-shot lead but gave those back with bogeys at 13 and 14. A tee ball in the water at the par five 13th led to bogey then a poor approach from the rough left him short at 14 and he failed to get up-and-down.
