You probably don’t know Julian Suri.
He’s 26-years-old, went to Duke, played junior golf with Brooks Koepka and lives in St. Augustine, Fl.
He went across the pond, ala Koepka, to compete on the European Challenge Tour, their version of the Web.com Tour. Goal was to get on the European Tour.
Suri made his huge breakthrough in Denmark on Sunday. His final round 64 saw him win the Made In Denmark event with a record 19-under par total.
Suri was locked up in a tense battle with veteran David Horsey of England. Suri held a one-shot lead standing on the final tee but Horsey fell apart in a big way, taking all the heat off Suri. Horsey’s tee shot went way left, so far left he had to play a provisional and that tee shot found the water hazard on the right side of the hole. With the lost ball and the hazard penalty, Horsey was hitting five into the par four.
It was a piece of cake for Suri. His tee shot found the middle, second on the green, two putts later he secured victory and a two-year exemption on the European Tour.
“It was a blast out there,” said Suri, who was all smiles afterward. “Especially in that atmosphere with the fans. It was really cool.” Indeed, the Danes in attendance were jammed in over the final three holes and the noise was loud.
Another American, John Daly, found himself in contention going into the final 18 but his one-over par 71 left him at 11-under par, eight back of the winner, but it was still a top 10 for Daly.
