Hideki Matsuyama has won four of his last five events.
The man who stopped him from making it five-of-five is Justin Thomas.
The final round of the Tournament of Champions has set the stage for a showdown between Thomas and Matsuyama.
Though 54-holes on the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Thomas has been the most consistent man in the field with three 67s that have put him at 18-under par, two in front of Matsuyma, whose 66 was the low round on Saturday, moving day.
They are one-two and will play head-to-head on Sunday. “If I’m near Hideki in the tournament, that’s usually a pretty good thing on Sunday,” Thomas said. But he was better than near, he’s ahead as the players who rank one-two in the FedEx Cup will go at it over the final 18.
Four shots back and in need of really low final rounds to contend are Jimmy Walker (70), Will McGirt (66) and Ryan Moore (71).
Thomas and Matsuyama have distanced themselves from all the big names.
Dustin Johnson is seven off the lead at 11-under par, world’s No. 1 Jason Day is 10-under while defending champion Jordan Spieth continued to sputter and is just eight-under after three trips around the Plantation Course.
