Day three of the Dell Technologies was a long, soggy test at the TPC Boston. Here’s how things shook out on moving day at the Dell Technologies championship:
Justin Thomas set a FedEx Cup playoff record with 12 threes on his scorecard. At the end of the day, he shot 63, posted 12-under par and set the 54-hole pace. “It’s tough to believe that I played the par fives in even par,” said Thomas, one of the tour’s longest hitters. “That drives me crazy. I didn’t have my best stuff today.”
Later in the round Marc Leishman posted 65 and joined Thomas at 12-under. Leishman had a chance to take the lead with a birdie at 18 but an errant drive forced him to play it as a three-shoter. After hitting 17 straight greens, he missed the 18th with a wedge in his hands and made par.
Paul Casey had the same chance as Leishman at 18. He was 11-under but couldn’t birdie the hole that had played so easy the first two days but turned tough on Saturday. Casey was in the last group on the course and finished in near-darkness. “Night golf,” Casey called it as he parred 18, shot 67 and found himself alone at 11-under par.
Jordan Spieth is starting to fire on all cylinders. He finished birdie-birdie to shoot 66 and got to 10-under. “The birdies at 17 and 18 were large,” Spieth said. “I’ll have to be aggressive tomorrow.”
Grayson Murray and Adam Hadwin joined Spieth at 10-under. Murray started the week at No. 70 but will now be well within the top 70 to move on to Chicago in two weeks.
Dustin Johnson came to life near the end of his round. D.J. birdied four of the last five holes, shot 66 and pulled within three of the leaders going into Monday’s finale.
Jon Rahm struggled with his putter and finished the day with a 71. He started with the lead but by day’s end found himself at nine-under, tied with Johnson.
Phil Mickelson shot 69 and got to eight-under and continued with his impressive play.
After a wet Sunday, the weather is expected to be perfect for the Monday, Labor Day finish.
