Kevin Chappell’s been nibbling at victory this year.
He just hasn’t done enough to take a big bite and get the PGA Tour win.
He’s nibbling again at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Chappell shot 64 on Saturday and his 11-under par total was good enough for the 36-hole lead.
“The goal is too keep plodding along, keep making birdies and see what it adds up to,” Chappell said after a round that saw him shoot 30 on the front nine with four birdies and a 20-foot eagle putt at the par five seventh.
He will go into the final two days with a one shot lead over Paul Casey and PGA champion Jimmy Walker. They’re both in at 10-under par. U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson should have been there with them. He was 10-under par and had an iron in his hand after a monster drive at the par five 18th. But he hit what he called “a banana slice” into the woods and a three-putt from 60 feet gave him a finishing double-bogey that dropped him to eight-under.
The field kept churning birdies and it took one-under to make the 36-hole cut and the world’s No. 1 player — Jason Day — made it right on the number.
