How low can two PGA Tour players shoot if they play a two-man scramble?
The answer is low, very low as in 16-under par. That’s what Kevin Na and partner Sean O’Hair shot on Friday on day one of the QBE Shootout at the Ritz-Carlton in Naples.
Na and O’Hair were a perfect nine-under for their first nine holes, shooting 27 then back off a bit with a 29 coming home for the 56 they signed for. As strong as they were, they were only a shot in the lead after scoring 12 birdies, two eagles and four pars.
Harold Varner III teamed with Ryan Palmer to shoot 15-under — 57 — and they were in second by themselves. Lanto Griffin and Mackenzie Hughes shot 14-under as did Harris English and Matt Kuchar.
Defending champions Rory Sabbatini and Kevin Tway were three back of the leaders with a 13-under par 59.
Abraham Ancer and Matt Wolff teamed up for the first time in this event and were one of the pre-tournament favorites. But they didn’t mesh well and could only manage to shoot 10-under and were tied for last place.
The field will play modified alternate shot on Saturday followed by best-ball (four-ball) on Sunday.
