Brooks Koepka says his knee is fine, says he’s hitting the ball well — but at the end of the day, he had two pretty miserable days at the Honda Classic.
Koepka, the field’s highest-ranked player, won’t be around for the weekend after a second straight 74 left him at eight-over, missing the cut by five shots.
Rickie Fowler tried to make a run on Friday, he shot 68 but his four-over total left him one shot too high as the 36-hole cut came at three-over par.
Justin Rose is going home early (7274), so is defending champion Keith Mitchell (75-72). Last week’s winner, Viktor Hovland, shot a whopping 10-over (77-73) but things went really haywire for Matt Every on Friday, he shot an 85 and was 19-over after two trips around PGA National.
Brendon Steele took the halfway lead. He shot 67 despite a bogey on his finishing hole, the 18th. He’s five-under and a shot in front of some familiar names including Luke Donald (70-66) and Lee Westwood (67-69). U.S. Open champ Gary Woodland was in at three-under.
Koepka said his poor performance had nothing to do with his knee. In fact, he said he’ll play the next four weeks straight — Bay Hill, The Players, Valspar and the WGC Match Play.
Tiger Woods took this week off and was expected to play next week at Bay Hill but Woods chose to take next week off to rest his stiff back.
