Brooks Koepka cranked it up Friday afternoon at the Northern Trust.
The reigning U.S. Open and PGA champ came up with four birdies and an eagle, good for a back-nine 30 and a six-under par 65 at Ridgewood that got him to 10-under par at the halfway mark of this first playoff event.
He shares the top of the leaderboard with Jamie Lovemark, who is still searching for a first career victory. Lovemark shot a second straight 66.
Round of the day was a 64 by Adam Scott, who contended late on Sunday at the PGA Championship. “I think the short putter has scared the long putter into performing better,” said Scott, who still has two putters in his bag although the short one has gone unused. Scott had eight birdies on his card and just one bogey. He’s alone at nine-under.
Dustin Johnson stayed in touch with the leaders. Two 67s have him in at eight-under par and the amazing part of that total is that he’s had a triple bogey in each of his first two rounds. He’s tied with Bryson DeChambeau, who shot 66 on Friday.
A pair of 68s have Phil Mickelson in contention at six-under.
Tiger Woods struggled with his putter in the second round. A missed four-footer led to bogey at the 15th then Woods three-putted his final hole of the day, the 18th, to shoot even par 71 and his even par 36-hole total made the cut on the number.
