It was all Minjee Lee Sunday at the L.A. Open.
The 22-year-old Aussie left the rest of the field in the dust, shooting 14-under par at the historic Wilshire Country Club in the heart of Los Angeles.
“Coming in, the first half of the year that I’ve had, I’ve been hitting it pretty solid and playing pretty solid,” Lee said after a closing 68 that was good for a four-shot victory. “I felt like it was close. I feel pretty good with this one.”
Lee might have felt it was close but a rally by Sei Young Kim fizzled and her 66 wasn’t low enough to make up any serious ground on Lee, who will rise to No. 2 when the Rolex World Rankings come out this week. This was her fourth top three finish in her last seven tournaments.
The week turned out to be a good one for American golfers. Annie Park (67) and Morgan Pressel (68) finished tied for third while Megan Kang closed with 68 and was in a group of five players tied for fifth at eight-under par.
On a side note, Lexi Thompson played poorly again at this event. Rounds of 75-72 left her on the wrong side of the cut line. She announced that she will be take time away from social media due to a large amount of negative comments she has received.
Thompson posted this message on her Instagram account:
“Hey everybody, just want to say I will be taking a break from social media. If I post it will be from my management team for me. I’m too involved with it, and to read some of the hurtful things being said to me lately isn’t fair and I’m not dealing with it. Thank you to my true fans out there I will be back on but I’m going to be focusing on me right now and my life. Thanks for understanding.”
