Bernhard Langer and Jeff Maggert took over the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Senior Open but there is a huge logjam of contenders going into Sunday’s final round at Del Paso Country Club.
Both Langer and Maggert bogeyed the difficult closing hole to finish at five-under par, 205, but there are eight players a shot back and another half-dozen who will start the final 18 within two shots, including Tom Watson.
“It’s really bunched up, there’s probably 20 guys who could win,” is how Langer assessed the situation after his round. He will play in the final pairing with Maggert and is happy to be there. “You know what’s going on and you can see what you have to do,” Langer said.
Watson, who held a share of the lead through 36-hole, sank clutch par-saving putts on the last two holes, including a 20-footer at the 18th. Kenny Perry and Colin Montgomerie are two of the five who are there with him at two-under.
Miguel Angel Jimenez and Duffy Waldorf are in the group at three-under.
In all, there are 20 players who are still under par going into the final round.
