Bernhard Langer picked up his 39th senior win last Sunday.
He almost took No. 40 in Naples but found himself thwarted by the world’s most interesting golfer.
Langer did what he does best over the final round of the Chubb Classic at the Lely Resort in Naples — he ground out a 68 and tied for the lead with Olin Browne and Miguel Angel Jimenez after regulation play.
But Langer’s hopes for a 40th were dashed by a bogey on the first playoff hole. Same for Browne, opening the door for Jimenez, who calmly holed a five-footer for the win.
“I played some good golf, hung in there. It wasn’t meant to be,” Langer said after the loss.
As for Jimenez, it was his first victory in the young season, he’s won every year since he turned 50 and had two major wins last year (Regions Tradition and Senior Open).
‘I’m working hard and I practice and go to the gym, apart from smoking and drinking,” Jimenez said. ”This is what I love to do. I love to play golf. To me, competing is my life. I go to any competition, I want to win. I working for that.”
”It’s the beginning of the season,” Jimenez said. ”We are on the third tournament of the season and all the season in front of us. This is gives you the energy and the confidence coming up.”
