It was a rainy, windy, dreary day in Naples, not a lot of folks showed up to watch the goings-on at the QBE Shootout but that didn’t stop Lexi Thompson and Tony Finau from making a move on Saturday.
After finishing the scramble on Friday barely ahead of the last place team, they played their way into contention in the modified alternate shot with the day’s second-best around. He shot 66, finishing with an approach by Lexi on the 18th that finished just six feet from the hole and Finau sank the birdie putt. That got them to 15-under and in contention going into Sunday’s final round, best ball portion of the shootout.
Graeme McDowell and Shane Lowry came roaring from back in the pack with a six-under 66, the day’s best effort and that got them to 18-under par and they share the lead with Steve Stricker and Sean O’Hair.
Brendan Steele and Keegan Bradley, former winners of this event, were in at 16-under par.
Sunday’s conditions should be sunny but chilly thanks to a cold front that moved across Florida on Saturday.
