It sounded too good to be true and yes, as it turns out, it was.
There was another American women’s golfer in position to win at the Australian Open on Sunday .
Lizette Salas played wonderful golf for three days and she went into the final 18 holes at 10-under par at the difficult Royal Adelaide Golf Club.
A win by Salas would have made it two straight wins on the LPGA Tour for the good old USA but alas, it wasn’t to be. Salas fell apart badly and maybe it was the lack of experience. She has only one win to her credit and that came back in May of 2014 at Kingsmill.
Salas struggled mightily the last day and shot 78, opening the door and holding it open for Ha Na Jang. Jang shot 69 and finished 10-under par for her fourth win. Salas did salvage a tie for seventh and finished five under. She can take solace in the fact that she beat the world’s No. 1 player by seven shots. Lydia Ko made her season debut and it was pretty unimpressive.
Ko finished two-over par and way down the list, tied for 46th.
Ko’s big rival, Ariya Jutanugarn, shot six-under and tied for third.
Michelle Wie got off to a great start using her new “claw” putting grip but she started experiencing back spasms in the second round and struggled over the final 36. She shot 70-71-76-75 and tied for 30th but the good news is that she finally made a cut.
