Let’s go with a little throwback and a quick trip back to 1969 with the Jefferson Airplane hit “Volunteers.”
Thursday in Texas, seems like a lot of American golfers decided to volunteer to play well at, what else — The Volunteers of America Texas Shootout.
Counter-revolution!
Sure, M.J. Hur jumped into the first round lead with a six-under par 65 but she’s surrounded by Americans bunched right behind her.
Michelle Wie is once again right in the mix after a windy first round at Las Colinas outside of Dallas. Wie carded a four-under par 67 and was tied for second but she wasn’t alone, she had other Americans up there with her. Marina Alex and Jennifer Song shot 67s. So did Sandra Changkija, whose name is not a household word. She played in 17 events last year and made just seven cuts so she’s looking for a break-through performance this week.
Cristie Kerr got off to a good start as well. She was in at 68 along with Jessica Korda and Amelia Lewis.
If you had to pick the player to beat, world’s No. 2 Ariya Jutanugarn is up there with Wie and the rest in that tie for second.
Lydia Ko, the world’s No. 1 who is showing off her 10th caddie this week, shot a one-under par 70, which left her a shot behind Lexi Thompson.
