Say hello to the youngest major champion ever in LPGA history.
Say hello to Lydia Ko.
Ko put on a back-nine clinic Sunday at the Evian Championship in France and won her first major in the process. She shot an eight-under par 63 that included five back nine birdies that sent her roaring past Lexi Thompson. Thompson played a nice front nine with four birdies but never made another and watched Ko blow past her with a birdie on the 12th hole.
Ko, who is 18-years-old and four months, took over the youngest winner category from Morgan Pressel, who was 18-years, 10 months when she won the Kraft Nabisco back in 2007.
Ko said she was happy because now everyone can stop asking her when she will win her first major. “Because now it’s done,” she said with a smile.
She finished with a 63 to break open a two-person duel between her and Thompson. Thompson made it easy for Ko to cruise to victory when she suffered a double-bogey five at the 14th.
Ko finished at 16-under six in front of runnerup Thompson. Shanshan Feng was a distant third at eight-under.
