He just might be the most entertaining man in golf.
Maurice Allen is your 2018 National Long Drive champion and he’s a showman, and a Ric Flair fan to boot.
Allen won the long-ball title with a 393-yard blast and it came on his last attempt. Long drivers are allowed three minutes to launch eight shots.
He defeated Justin Moose, who wasn’t at his best in the finals against Allen.
Allen is an interesting cat. He lives in Pine Hills, Florida, went to the same high school as NBA star Darryl Dawkins (Orlando Evans) and graduated from Florida A&M University with a degree in biology. After working as a chiropractor in the Atlanta area, he was bitten by the golf bug. His strength and flexibility translated well to the long ball.
He’s dedicated to his community. He was named “Ambassador Of Golf” by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in 2013 and immediately after winning the 2018 title Wednesday night, he announced he’s donating $20,000 of his winnings to scholarship funds for students at Orlando Evans High.
He’s part entertainer, part preacher and a lot long driver. He believes in God and country and understands the African-American journey in American history.
Allen has that knack for connecting with the audiences at long drive competitions and that Flair impersonation is off the charts. Would put a smile on anyone’s face.
He gave all the credit for his title to his mother, who watched him win in person. “Baby, this is your belt,” he said to her as he held the massive championship belt that was presented to him.
He was on the tee offering encouragement to Phillis Meti, who defeated Chloe Garner of South in the women’s finals. Meti’s winner went 313 yards, beating Garner by three yards to win her third long drive title.
