The line of contenders behind third-round leader Gary Woodland looks like single-file cars in a NASCAR competition.
Woodland is out in front of the pack, barely. He shot 66 on Saturday at El Camaleon Golf Club to get to 18-under par. He’s the 54-hole leader going into what could possibly be a scramble down the stretch on Sunday for the OHL Classic title.
The round of the day belonged to Pat Perez, whose nine-under par 62 bought him within a shot of Woodland at 17-under par. One back of him is Scott Piercey (66) while Seamus Power’s 64 got him to 15-under par.
Former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson was by himself at 14-under to complete the single-file line of challengers going into the final 18.
It has been seven years since Woodland played in this event. He is a newlywed, coming in after taking some time off and the return to Mayakoba looks like a good decision. “The course sets up well for me,” Woodland said. “I can hit a lot of irons off the tee, lay back and attack from there.”
