Not one player made it to the first tee Thursday at the Mayakoba Classic.
Day-long rain was the culprit.
Things weren’t looking very good for Friday either.
“We’ll know more Friday morning,” said Slugger White, the ever-present head-honcho of rules and tournament competitions for the PGA Tour.
The heavy rains ended by late Thursday afternoon and most of the players did get to spent some time working on their chipping and putting. Another front came in Thursday night and threatened Friday as well. There was an 80 percent chance of more rain Friday afternoon.
They got a break early Friday and play began but more rain was expected by early afternoon. Danny Lee was the hottest player on the course early Friday, three birdies and an eagle over his first five holes got him to five-under par. There were birdies to be had with the field playing lift-clean-and-place.
The course had taken eight inches of rain prior to the scheduled start on Thursday.
The tour won’t have much choice but to consider the possibility of a Monday finish.
There was some good news however. The weekend forecast was excellent.
If they can’t play all day Friday, they’ll play from dawn to dark on Saturday and possibly the same on Sunday.
But a Monday finish, even if the event is cut to 54-holes, looks like a given.
