Rory McIlroy made his move on Friday at the French Open and found himself tied at the top after 36 holes at Le Golf National.
McIlroy’s 66 left him in a group of five co-leaders after his drive at the 18th found the water for a second straight day.
He had worked his way to six-under for the day and held the lead by himself but he hooked his final drive of the day into the lake on the left of the final fairway.
Still, he admitted his swing is a work in progress. “When I put it in the position where I’m supposed to it goes where I want it to,” McIlroy said of his latest swing modifications.
He will go into the third round tied with Mikko Ilonen (68), Thongchai Jaidee (70), Brandon Stone (68) and Jeunghun Wang (68).
First round leader Lucas Bjerregaard couldn’t repeat his Thursday magic and shot 74 to fall back to two-under and tied for 13th.
