It’s about time.
About time to end the silly “cross-over” season that the PGA Tour insists on throwing at us every fall.
This week’s RSM Classic on at Sea Island bring a merciful end to the nonsense.
A couple of quick notes on the RSM. First, it is in a really neat place — Sea Island which is located on St. Simons Island. It’s a fantastic place if you can afford to live there but you better be in that upper one percent. Second, it’s a really crummy field, the only saving grace this week is that some name players like Matt Kuchar live on St. Simons Island and play in the event.
Davis Love III is the tournament host. You have to squint to find some recognizable names but there are a few — Kevin Kisner, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson and last week’s winner — Patton Kizzire, another St. Simons resident.
You might wonder who the defending champion is this week?
Would you believe Mac Hughes? The next logical question might be who the heck is Mac Hughes?
Hughes is the Canadian player who won here last year then promptly vanished off the face of the earth when you consider his record. In 2017 he had just one top 10 and missed the cut eight times. He comes into this week after missed cuts at The Safeway and last week’s OHL in Mayakoba. So basically, don’t expect much from Hughes this week.
The rest of the field looks like a Web.com event, which is basically what this silly cross-over season has become.
But this is it.
The Tour takes a break for the holidays and the winners from last season and this cross-over season will convene in Kapalua on Jan. 4 for the Tournament of Champions.
Thankfully.

I enjoy the crossover season, it’s a great opportunity for the new tour members to get their feet wet. Everyone has to start somewhere…..I remember a guy by the name of Tom Lehman who needed opportunities similar to this to get the seasoning he needed. Not everyone can burst onto the scene as a superstar, and we should support them all….no telling who will be a star in 5 years.

They’ve been getting their feet wet on the Web.com…..simply don’t like these weak fields, Tom Lehman?? Wow, you had to go back what seems like forever to dig that one up, not sure there was a cross-over season when he came out, back then they had all those stupid made-for-TV events that Freddie Couples dominated and it was termed “The Silly Season”…..the PGA Tour in its infinite greed, found some willing suckers, sorry, I mean sponsors, to put up more cash for these guys in lesser venues with lesser fields. We can agree to disagree, thanks for checking in Charlie!

Have to agree that the crossover season is largely boring, and that I watch far less often. I find myself really looking forward to the Tournament of Champions. It’s like a breath of fresh air to see the heavyweights back in that beautiful tropical setting and giving us hope that winter and nightfall at 5:00 PM is not endless.

True RM, very true but the Epicenter of the GOLF WORLD will be honed in on Albany at the end of the month when Tiger makes his return, I’m sure the viewing audience will be beyond huge!
