This one isn’t going to sit very well with The Lamest Commissioner In All The Land (aka Greg Norman) and his Saudi sugar daddies.
Official World Ranking Points were granted this week to the Gira de Golf Profesional Mexicana — which is basically a tour for up-and-comers south of the border.
“This is a significant milestone for golf and OWGR is deeply encouraged by the achievement and the continued efforts in the advancement of the sport of golf in Mexico,” OWGR Chairman Peter Dawson said. “We look forward to watching the progress of Gira de Golf Professional de Mexicana as it continues to play a key role in the development of players from the region.”
Now, here’s the real facts.
The Gira de Golf Profesional was started back in 2017. It applied for World Ranking Points more than 16 months ago and went through the process.
Here’s where it gets interesting. The Mexico-based tour plays 54-hole events. BUT, and there’s a big but here — they have a 36-hole cut — which is something the OWGR committee has as part of its requirements.
The Mexican Tour also has an open entry path – akin to a qualifying process or qualifying school if you will. LIV’s problem is that it is a closed shop — it’s an “invitation only” situation, there’s no qualifying process, no Monday qualifiers for anyone who wants to show up and try to get in the field and it certainly has no Q-School. And that’s another part of the OWGR qualification process.
So this news is sure to get The Lamest Commissioner In All The Land’s blood pressure up.
Sorry ’bout that Greg.
