Michelle Wie’s career has been marred by injuries and that bug has bitten her again.
Wie came back to the United States after last week’s Hana Bank event in South Korea and underwent surgery on her right hand Thursday.
Wie put out this statement after the operation:
“After countless MRI’s, X-rays, CT scans, and doctor consultations, I was diagnosed with having a small Avulsion Fracture, bone spurring, and nerve entrapment in my right hand. After 3 cortisone injections and some rest following the British Open, we were hoping it was going to be enough to grind through the rest of the season, but it just wasn’t enough to get me through.
“So I made the decision after Hana Bank to withdraw from the rest of the season, come back to the states, and get surgery to fix these issues. It’s been disheartening dealing with pain in my hand all year but hopefully I am finally on the path to being and STAYING pain free!
“Happy to announce that surgery was a success today and I cannot wait to start my rehab so that I can come back stronger and healthier than ever. Huge thank you to Dr. Weiland’s team at HSS for taking great care of me throughout this process and to all my fans for your unwavering support. It truly means the world to me. I’ll be back soon guys!!!! Promise.”
Wie has been perhaps the most popular American player on the LPGA Tour for most of her career and hopefully can compete pain-free in 2019.
Danielle Kang A Shot Back In Shanghai:
The LPGA Tour’s Asian swing is in Shanghai this week and American Danielle Kang is right in the thick of it after 36-holes.
Kang added a 68 on Friday to her opening 67 and she’s tied for second with Ariya Jutanugarn at nine-under par, just a shot back of halfway leader Sei Young Kim.
Kang has started working with Butch Harmon and her name has been popping up higher on the leaderboards.
The former UCLA player is coming in off a tie for third at the Hana Bank and credited her good play to her work with Harmon:
“We just kind of simplify the game a lot,” she said. “Just trying to calm it down and get back to how I used to play. Just more feel golf. Thinking less mechanics and going with the flow.
“Today’s round went very smooth,” Kang said. “Coming off very good momentum after last week, and I’ve been hitting the ball really well, playing great. I’ve just been trusting my game and just keep giving myself birdie chances. They kept rolling in.”
