If Phil Mickelson’s performance this past week at the Houston Open was his prep for the upcoming Masters, well, Lefty needs a lot more work.
After sloppy rounds of 76-73, Phil was nine-under for 36-hole and missed the cut (three-over) by a half-dozen shots. He was nine-over and he holed his final shot of his week at the par four 18th for an eagle two from 192 yards. Lefty will probably say he has momentum heading to Augusta National. Lefty also set a new career low. He made his highest-ever career score on a par three — an eight at the 182-yard ninth were he hit two, nearly three balls in the creek short of the green on his way to a big-fat EIGHT!
Another Masters champ who missed the cut was Jordan Spieth. Jordy shot 73-71 and missed it by a shot.
Halfway leader at difficult Memorial Park is Sam Burns, who shot 65 and is in at seven-under par.
First round leader Brandt Snedeker backed off his opening 65 with a 71 and dropped back in a tie for fourth at four-under.
World’s No. 1 Dustin Johnson started to find his game with a 66 that got him to two-under, tied for 14th but in position to move up the leaderboard with more rounds like Friday’s.
Course “consultant” Brooks Koepka made the cut by a shot. He’s at two-under (72-70) and tied for 46th. World’s No. 10 Tyrrell Hatton was tied for 36th at one-over (71-70).
Defending champion Lanto Griffin won’t repeat. He made the cut on the number with rounds of 72-71.
