Lydia Ko came to Hawaii off back-to-back wins.
She’s 18.
Now it was Minjee Lee’s turn.
She’s 19.
Lee, the Australian, shot a 30 on the back nine at Ko Olina Saturday to win the Lotte Championship.
We’ll repeat once more. She’s 19-years-old.
Sad to say but the growing reality of the LPGA Tour is that 30 is the new 50. If you’re over 29, you are, sorry to say, a bit over-the-hill.
There’s a youth movement, for certain and Lee’s victory took that a step further.
It’s not that often a player shoot 30 on the back nine the final day for 64 to come from five shots back. That’s what Lee accomplished.
She, along with a host of others, were in pursuit of little-known American Katie Burnett, who was trying to pull off a major upset of sorts. She’s played all over and is trying to find a place on the LPGA Tour. She almost found it but Lee’s run was simply too much for her. Heck, that’s too much for just about anyone not named Nicklaus or Woods.
Lee had four birdies and an eagle coming home to pick up her second LPGA win. This is her second season on tour.
Good on ‘ya, as the Aussies say.
