There was more Mackenzie Hughes Friday at the RSM Classic.
The rookie from Canada refused to spend just one day in the PGA Tour spotlight. He followed up his opening 61 with a bogey-free 67 on the Plantation course at Sea Island to land at 14-under par through 36 holes of the championship.
“I say ‘eh’ a lot,” Hughes said of the phrase that often identifies folks from Canada. “I’m kinda boring,” said the Web.com graduate.
Hughes didn’t blink at all and he’ll take a two-shot lead over Cheng Tsung Pan into Saturday’s third round.
Veteran Chad Champbell was one of four players at 11-under while an astonishing 10 players were jammed up at 10-under par.
Jim Furyk, one the biggest names in the field, is five off Hughes’ lead at nine-under.
Some other big names didn’t make the cut. With scoring coming easy to most of the field, it took five-under par to make the weekend and Matt Kuchar didn’t. Kuchar could only manage even par, same for Ryder Cup captain and tournament host Davis Love III.
