It was supposed to be a nice week in the Bahamas.
Perfect setting to open the Web.com Tour’s 2017 season. They even went with a very non-traditional Sunday start and Wednesday, mid-week finish. It was billed as the “Great Exhuma Classic.”
Perfect, right?
Unfortunately Mother Nature decided she would like a four-day Bahamas vacation and packed some winds for her trip.
If you didn’t catch any of the action on the Golf Channel, you missed a great episode of “When The Winds Blow.”
Opening day saw winds blowing 30-40 miles per hour. Brutal.
Some played without their caps rather than see them blow away.
They had the highest 36-hole cut, EVER on the Web.com. If you were 11-over or better, you got to stick around for more torture.
Greg Eason has to get an award for gutting it out. He shot 91-95 for the first two day and lost, get this — 32 golf balls. “I started with 36 balls and ended with four,” Eason said on his Twitter account.
Over the four days, there were only seven rounds under 70.
When the ordeal was finally over, Kyle Thompson won with rounds of 76-70-70-70 — two-under par. He was the only man under par.
Nicholas Thompson, brother of LPGA star Lexi, shot 75-67-75-71 to shoot even par and tie for second with Andrew Yung (77-72-70-69). Thompson’s 67 was low round of the week.
In all, it was brutal. Lesson of the week? Don’t mess with Mother Nature.
